Melissa Albright

Assistant Project Manager

Melissa Albright joined Direct Impact in 2011 and currently provides account management for one of DI’s largest client accounts in Canada.

Previously, Melissa worked at Penn Schoen Berland as executive assistant to both Jonathan Gardner, chief operating officer and Howard Paster, executive vice president of WPP.  In addition, she was responsible for managing logistical functions for the 75-person office including event planning and employee relations.

Prior to PSB, Melissa served as an assistant at the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs at the Pentagon. She aided the community relations division before serving as the assistant to the regimental sergeant major and deputy chief of public affairs, respectively.

Melissa graduated from Bridgewater College with a B.A. in communication studies with a concentration in media studies.

Shane Austin

Project Manager

Shane Austin joined DI as a project manager for several of the firm’s corporate accounts. In this role, he manages communications, corporate outreach strategies and events at the local level through DI’s network of field operations across the United States.

Prior to joining DI, Shane was the public policy specialist for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, where he advocated on issues affecting seniors such as Medicare, Medicaid and a national strategy to defeat Alzheimer’s disease. In this position he also managed grassroots advocacy efforts of the organization’s 1,600 members.  Shane also served as a staffer on Capitol Hill for U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and earlier on the successful 2004 re-election campaign of former U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas.

Shane holds a B.S.B.A. with a concentration in marketing management from the University of Arkansas.

Leigh Beasley

Project Manager

Leigh Beasley oversees marketing and new business efforts for Direct Impact, in addition to managing grassroots public relations programs for one of the firm’s largest clients. She previously served as an assistant project manager, providing day-to-day account support for Fortune 100 companies and offering counsel to Direct Impact’s network of field operatives. She has also served on the firm’s rapid response team, providing strategic media analysis to clients during times of crisis.

Prior to Direct Impact, Leigh worked at an integrated marketing communications firm in Tallahassee, Fla. In this capacity, she worked as regional communications consultant for Ford Motor Company, providing public relations counsel for Ford dealerships statewide and implementing national media relations and event programs at the state and local level. In addition to her work for Ford, she executed a public awareness campaign on behalf of VISIT FLORIDA, the state’s tourism marketing corporation, educating state legislators on the importance of sustained funding for tourism marketing. Leigh also worked as a public information specialist in the Office of the Attorney General, Bill McCollum, where she coordinated communications efforts with national and statewide media.

Leigh graduated from The Florida State University with a B.S. in public relations.

Charles Bittermann

Assistant Project Manager

Charlie Bittermann serves as an assistant project manager and specializes in grassroots advocacy, community partnerships, corporate reputations and crisis communications. He assists in the execution of strategic marketing, media relations and counsel for one of DI’s largest clients. Charlie joined DI in the summer of 2011 as an intern.

Previously, Charlie was legislative director at the Northwestern University School of Law, Center on Wrongful Convictions, and clerked at a boutique corporate litigation firm in Chicago.

Charlie received his Bachelor of Arts in political science with a minor in Art History from Kenyon College.

Chris Bourassa joined DI in 2008, first working in the firm’s Communications Center. He has since transitioned into a financial administrator in the Washington, D.C. office where he is responsible for accounts payable, budget monitoring and billing for intercompany projects.

Julie Carney

As a senior project manager, Julie Carney manages targeted field programs for several of DI’s corporate clients. In this role, she works with our nationwide field network to highlight corporate sustainability programs and further policy objectives through earned media, events and outreach to key stakeholders and influencers.

Julie comes to DI from the National Federation of Independent Business. As senior manager, Julie directed all NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation activities to promote and encourage small businesses and entrepreneurship, including their nationwide scholarship program.  She also created the national rollout for the introduction of Entrepreneur-in-the-Classroom, a Web-based program designed to promote entrepreneurship among high school educators and students. Additionally, Julie worked for Quinn Gillespie & Associates as an event planner and marketing coordinator.

Julie received a B.A. in public affairs and corporate communications from Southern Methodist University.

Samantha Coulombe

Senior Project Manager

Samantha Coulombe is responsible for managing field and earned media programs for a wide range of some of our biggest clients. She coordinates with field teams in local markets throughout the country, ensures campaign activities are on target and provides strategic counsel for our programs.

Samantha started her career at DI in 2006 as a project manager in the Communications Center. Here, she oversaw telephone outreach programs aimed at educating and recruiting potential advocates to take grassroots action on behalf of our clients.

Prior to joining DI, Samantha was the Butler-Wooten Civil Justice Fellow at public Citizen, where she developed grassroots programs that focused on legislation affecting medical malpractice and class action issues; and was a community organizer at ACORN where she built grassroots community organizations in low-income neighborhoods.

Samantha earned a B.A. from Duke University and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center.

Bryan Virgil Crist

Bryan Virgil Crist joined the Direct Impact team in January of 2012 as an assistant project manager. In this role, he helps manage grassroots public relations initiatives and projects for one of the firm’s most recognized clients. Bryan also provides management and public relations support for various other clients and helps develop content for DI’s social media platforms.

Bryan comes to DI from midsized marketing and communication agency, CRT/tanaka. He has a wide variety of industry experience working with consumer, food, technology, not-for-profit and corporate brands to execute a variety of communications goals and objectives. His work has included managing social media campaigns, spearheading media events and providing day-to-day public relations counsel to a multitude of clients. Bryan also assisted in business development opportunities for CRT/tanaka and contributed on their social media channels.

Bryan graduated from James Madison University and holds B.A. in communication studies with a focus in public relations. He is an active member of both the American Marketing Association and the Public Relations Society of America in Washington, D.C.

Molly Douglas is the director of content development for DI, serving as the lead editorial contributor for programs ranging from healthcare to technology, as well as major issue advocacy campaigns. Molly joined DI in 2003 and brings more than 13 years experience in the public relations, marketing and grassroots communications fields.

Prior to joining DI, Molly was a senior consultant for a Washington, D.C.-based communications firm. Here she managed several of the firm’s largest programs, working collaboratively with the Department of Labor and the Department of Education as well as multiple non-profit organizations, including Operation Smile and the Casey Foundation.

Molly began her career with a Philadelphia-based public relations firm, where she managed editorial development, media outreach and event coordination for national and regional campaigns.

Molly holds a B.A. from the College of William and Mary.

Prior to joining DI, Jayne served as an account coordinator at a boutique PR agency in Toronto, Ontario. In this role, she gained experience in media relations, event management and strategic planning for a variety of international food, travel and beauty clients.

Jayne attended the Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, where she earned a postgraduate certificate in public relations. She holds a a B.A. in journalism from St. Thomas University.

Sean Flaherty

Network Administrator

Sean Flaherty joined DI in 2003, bringing eight years of experience in application development, tech support and customer service. As network administrator, Sean designs, develops and maintains company databases and custom applications on behalf of DI and its clients and is responsible for ensuring that all data meets DI’s stringent integrity standards. Sean writes, tests, debugs and installs new and existing code, and designs databases around incoming data and program requirements. He also consults with users to identify current operating procedures, clarify program objectives and make improvements to existing procedures; he assists in web development and maintenance as the liaison between developers and client leaders.

Before joining DI, Sean worked as a customer service representative for Fidelity National Information Solutions, Regis College and Environmental Risk Information and Imaging Services

He is a certified Computer Systems Specialist from Northeastern University and holds a B.S. in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also has knowledge of Visual FoxPro, Visual Basic, C/C++, UNIX and HTML.

Kristin Ford-Glencross joined Direct Impact in early 2010 and currently provides account management for one of DI’s largest clients. Kristin started her career at DI as a fulfillment administrative assistant in the Communications Center. There, she was responsible for assisting with the fulfillment management and materials developed for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s redesigned currency education program for the new $100 note. Prior to joining DI, Kristin worked in both the packaging and publishing industries.

Kristin is a graduate of Lehigh University with Bachelor’s degrees in political science and international relations, concentrating in global conflict studies.  She is currently pursuing a Masters in political management from the George Washington University.

Susan Hendrick has extensive experience in the communications industry and currently provides media relations counsel for a variety of Direct Impact clients.

Susan joined Direct Impact from the media practice of Burson-Marsteller. Prior to joining Burson-Marsteller, Susan worked in the Business Development Department at Ketchum Public Relations. Susan also has a variety of experience in the journalism industry. She was a member of the Multimedia Department at Agence France-Press (AFP). While in graduate school, Susan was a production assistant at WUSA*9, the local CBS affiliate in the D.C. market and was part of the Metro news team at the Washingtonpost.com. While in New York, Susan was a research assistant at the New York Daily News and a freelance writer for Men’s Fitness magazine.

Susan earned her M.A. from Georgetown University from their Communication, Culture and Technology program and a B.A. from Columbia University, specializing in Political Science and Sociology.

Nathan brings nearly a decade of political and non-profit experience to his role at Direct Impact. His previous experience includes management positions with presidential, congressional and gubernatorial campaigns. Most recently, he’s worked with local, national and international non-profit groups based in Seattle to expand the political reach of interfaith partnerships.

As a client executive at DI, Alia Khayrullina provides project-based assistance across a number of client service accounts. In addition, she works directly under DI’s president, Nicole Cornish, providing full support for day-to-day operations of the firm.

Prior to joining Direct Impact, Alia worked in the government, private and nonprofit sectors in Washington, D.C. At Mensah & Dzubow PLLC, she led interviews for asylum-seekers, prepared affidavits and researched human rights violations. More recently, she worked at a mid-sized strategic communications firm, Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter and Associates, where she assisted in strategy development on issues such as international political marketing and public affairs; and worked on social media campaigns for various clients.

Alia holds a Bachelors degree in international affairs with a focus in conflict and security and Europe and Eurasia from George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Julie Krupp serves as a senior project manager on-site with one of DI’s largest clients. She brings extensive expertise in public relations and account management from her more than six years of experience.

Tim Lyons has managed various projects for DI, including significant roles for a variety of DI clients, developing strategies to elevate the client’s visibility at the grassroots level and coordinating with DI’s network of field teams to implement special events and coordinate media outreach.

Prior to DI, Tim worked for a U.S. Senator and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a project director and deputy press secretary, respectively. During that time, he also assisted The White House Office of Presidential Advance, serving as a lead on more than ten domestic and international events for President George W. Bush including fundraisers, meetings with families of Fallen Soldiers, receptions for the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel and joint press conferences with foreign heads of state.

Tim graduated from Syracuse University in 2005 with a B.A. in broadcast journalism and political science.

Christina Mountz serves as the executive assistant to CEO, Dave DenHerder. In her role she provides support for DI accounts, coordinating with senior leadership at Direct Impact, sister companies and the clients’ in-house communicators to assist with overall account management. Christina also helps to organize and maintain DI’s extensive field network.

Before joining DI, Christina was employed in Dallas, Texas at Children’s Medical Center, one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation. She worked in the public relations department, and more specifically, event planning and media relations. Christina served as project manager for March of Dimes, and though fundraising events helped the hospital raise more than $100,000 in donations for the non-profit organization.

Christina graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in English and Sociology.

A seasoned communications and community relations professional, Shawna brings to DI a wealth of experience in both local and national public relations and campaign management for consumer brands and public affairs campaigns.

Prior to joining DI, Shawna managed corporate communications and public affairs accounts for Schneider Associates, a Boston-area marketing and communications firm specializing in launching new products and communities. There she spearheaded national media launches for clients in the commercial real estate, technology, education and financial services sectors. She has extensive experience with top-tier press including Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, the Today Show, Regis & Kelly and Fox & Friends.

In addition to her knowledge of national campaign launches, Shawna has planned and executed dozens of strategic communications campaigns designed to educate and influence Massachusetts voters to support  economic development projects, winning more than 40 local and state permitting approvals. She has pitched and secured local editorial board meetings, managed letter to the editor campaigns and forged key relationships with influential journalists and local bloggers. Shawna also boasts extensive experience in the public sector with the Department of Defense, the Lamia Afghan Foundation, Department of State and the International Rescue Committee.

Shawna holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Brown University and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and German studies from Boston College.

Nicole Cornish

Chief Executive Officer

Nicole Cornish oversees day-to-day operations, manages the new business development process, leads key client accounts and serves as primary liaison for DI’s national grassroots field network.

Nicole joined the DI team in 2003, providing client leader services for some of the company’s highest profile clientele including Pfizer, Merck, Ford Motor Company and various trade associations and industry coalitions. Since joining DI, Nicole has focused on targeting audiences through community-based organization outreach, developing relationships with influential opinion leaders and mobilizing local stakeholders to deliver an issue, brand or company key message. Previously, Nicole served as president of Direct Impact.

Before joining Direct Impact, Nicole worked in Burson-Marsteller’s San Diego office, where she served as brand practice manager for the Sony Electronics Corporation-West Coast account. Previously, she worked for Edelman-New York as a technology practice account supervisor for Fuji Photo Film, U.S.A., managing several digital imaging product launch activities, Internet campaign initiatives and the promotion of corporate milestones. In both these positions, her responsibilities included long- and short-term communications program development and special event planning.

Bumps, Randy

Randy Bumps

Executive Vice President

As executive vice president, Randy Bumps brings expertise in corporate communications, business development, government relations and grassroots efforts to his role at Direct Impact. With more than 15 years of experience in state and federal political, elected and government affairs positions, Randy has significant leadership experience in developing and executing electoral and legislative strategies, as well as a considerable background in grassroots mobilization across many states in the country.

Prior to joining DI, Randy served as the chief political strategist for the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s (NRSC) Independent Expenditure Unit. Previously, he served as the NRSC Political Director where he provided strategic political counsel to the Chairman of the Committee, incumbent Senators and their staff, and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate. He maintains relationships with a broad network of federal and state political and policy leaders across a number of states.

His previous political experience also includes work as the northeast Regional Political Director for the Republican National Committee (RNC), where he oversaw all RNC field operations in New England, New Jersey and New York; Chairman of the Maine Republican party; Executive Director of the Bush/Cheney ’04 campaign in Maine; and State Director and Deputy Campaign Manager to U.S. Senator Susan Collins.

From 1996-2002, Bumps served as a Member of the Maine House of Representatives representing Albion, China, Benton and Unity Plantation.

Randy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Bates College. He also spent a semester of study at The American University in Washington, D.C.

Connie Partoyan

Bringing more than 15 years experience managing public relations, marketing and political campaigns across multiple media markets, Connie Partoyan joined DI in 2009. Connie is leading an integrated legislative campaign for one of DI and Burson-Marsteller’s largest clients. In addition, she serves as a senior leader on DI’s new business development team and provides media and campaign strategy for its existing clientele.

Connie has extensive experience in managing communications, building grassroots coalitions and providing strategic counsel for senior executives and Members of Congress. This experience has served her well in both the private and public sectors.

Before joining DI, Connie served four years as chief of staff for Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) where she managed the four offices and oversaw the Congresswoman’s communications operation. In her role Connie helped position the Congresswoman as a leader in the Republican Conference and managed her election into House Republican Leadership. Connie also served as administrative assistant and press secretary for Congressman Rick White (R-WA) who founded the Congressional Internet Caucus and as Deputy Press Secretary to Senator Slade Gorton (R-WA). She was Counselor and Senior Advisor for the Department of Commerce’s Technology Administration, where she helped promote the Administration’s technology agenda.

Her work in the private sector includes positions as government affairs counselor for Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds, where she worked on health IT, broadband, natural resources and a number of other issues; as executive vice president and chief operating officer for TechNet, she developed the long-term political, policy and growth strategy for the organization; and as director of communications for the Information Technology Industry Council, where she worked to enhance the public policy agenda of the technology trade association representing 28 of the largest IT companies.

Connie graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA with a B.A. in business administration.

Andrew Cumpsty

Andrew Cumpsty

Andrew Cumpsty is a managing director in the London office, where he works with DI’s network of field teams across the United Kingdom to provide clients with seamless yet locally driven public relations and stakeholder engagement uniquely tailored to speak to different communities.

Cumpsty is a senior corporate media and external affairs leader with more than 18 years of experience, throughout which he has led corporate and public affairs for global brands including McDonald’s, mobile network Hutchison 3G, Ericsson and global human resources consulting group Penna. His political and commercial experience is built on notable successes as a former Leader of Reading Council, and as founder and Chairman of the Enterprise Forum which plays an important role in keeping industry abreast with Conservative Party thinking. He also served as a senior policy advisor at Fleishman-Hillard where he advised CEOs and senior directors of international and UK organizations on all aspects of policy, politics, international affairs, media and public relations.

Cumpsty graduated from Bradford University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies. He holds Advanced Certification from the Royal Institute of Public Health and Advanced Certification from the Certified Institution of Environmental Health Officers.

Vince Price

In his 11-plus year tenure, Vince Price has served as a financial administrator, client billing manger and government contracts manager for the Burson-Marsteller D.C. office, and then as a finance director following his transfer to Direct Impact in July 2005.

In his role as finance director, Vince is responsible for the office P&L, including quarterly budgeting and planning, and monthly reporting to Burson-Marsteller. Additionally, Vince is responsible for client contracting, client billing, accounts receivable and revenue forecasting.

Prior to joining DI, Vince worked for 10 years in sales management for Glover Equipment and D&F Office Furniture. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and politics from the University of Maryland College Park.

Rhonda Belluso offers years of experience in field coordination, environmental and public interest lobbying, public relations and marketing. She is responsible for overseeing the local field and media operations for numerous national grassroots campaigns in Canada, providing day-to-day coordination and implementation of campaign strategies.

Prior to joining DI, Rhonda served as field outreach development manager and corporate researcher for the National Environmental Trust. In this capacity, she supervised field organizers working on global environmental issues, overseeing the Salmon Aquaculture Markets Campaign and the Environmental Health Campaign.

Rhonda has held positions with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) and Limited Corporation. She holds a B.S. in marketing of consumer textiles and apparel from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Nicholas Breeding

Vice President

Nicholas Breeding manages programs for high-profile, key clients at the firm, applying his previous experience with presidential, congressional, gubernatorial and state constitutional grassroots campaigns.

Prior to joining DI, Nicholas was associate director of political affairs at the White House. In addition to his time in the Executive Office of the President, he served under Secretaries Mel Martinez and Alphonso Jackson at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; staffed domestic and international travel assignments with the Offices of Presidential and Vice Presidential Advance; and served under Governor Mitt Romney at the Republican Governors Association.

Nicholas is a graduate of Roanoke College and an alumnus of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership. He is a native of Southern Virginia.

Amy Cloessner oversees DI’s Communications Center and is responsible for new business development. She provides strategic counsel for our high-volume, high-quality outreach programs, including our signature Legislative Correspondent campaigns and community-based education programs. She brings years of experience in developing cost-effective grassroots programs, data targeting and acquisition, message development, specialist training, troubleshooting and analysis.

During her time at DI, Amy has served as client lead for several programs on varying issues, such as healthcare, transportation, energy, labor and trade laws and public safety.

Prior to joining DI in 2002, she received her B.A. in political science from Louisiana State University and her Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where she also worked to provide legal assistance to low-income families in the area.

Michael Fleischer, vice president at Direct Impact, has more than a dozen years of experience in government and public affairs, specializing in legislative and regulatory communications. Michael has expertise in designing and implementing advocacy campaigns at the federal and state level. He has worked on a variety of issue areas including energy, environment, transportation and financial services.

Before joining Direct Impact, Michael was vice president at Lighthouse Consulting Group, a boutique government affairs firm specializing energy and environmental issues. He also served as vice president of public affairs at Widmeyer Communications, a public policy oriented public affairs firm where he played a key role in a wide range of successful issues management, legislative and advocacy campaigns.

With a strong background in media and politics, he has served as the principal staffer for a number of corporate and non-profit clients, including AES Corporation, Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the US Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), JP Morgan Chase Card Services, Consumers United for Rail Equity (CURE), and the Committee for Economic Development (CED).

Michael began his career at The Washington Post on the national news and politics desk where he helped cover the Clinton impeachment process, the 1998 congressional elections, the NATO bombings in Serbia and the capitol police shootings.

Michael is a graduate of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, where he received his J.D., and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from James Madison University. Michael’s extensive travels include the Dominican Republic, France, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Spain, the United Kingdom and Venezuela.

Heidi Lifson is responsible for identifying new business opportunities within the government and overseeing existing government programs, including the day-to-day management of three task orders for the U.S. Treasury educational outreach program.

During her time at DI, Heidi has worked on a wide variety of projects, ranging from educating senior citizens about their Medicare choices and working with physicians, to preventing legislation regarding medical malpractice, to assisting retailers in obtaining the Sacagawea golden dollar coin. For each program, Heidi oversaw all components of outreach and reporting, including data cleansing, database programming, recruiter training, direct mail and fax production, response management, progress tracking, troubleshooting and reporting final results.

Prior to joining DI in 2000, Heidi spent a total of six years working with individuals with developmental disabilities; and as an advocate, living arrangement supervisor, employment and volunteer consultant.

Heidi received a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University and a B.S. in human services from the University of Hartford.

Judy Ostronic brings more than15 years experience in government affairs and grassroots management. Judy works closely with Direct Impact’s parent company, Burson-Marsteller, to facilitate integrated client services between the two companies. Judy has developed and implemented numerous grassroots outreach strategies targeting state and federal policy makers, consumers and other stakeholder groups.

Judy’s work includes leadership training for clients such as the National Association of REALTORS(r). She has experience managing a variety of unique campaigns including GOTV efforts at the state and local level, as well as helping clients with their communications strategies to engage and mobilize employees, third party stakeholders and hard-to-reach audiences.

Prior to joining Direct Impact, Judy represented Northeast Utilities System in Washington, D.C., tracking and engaging in the national energy policy debate and, specifically, policies related to natural gas. Additionally, Judy oversaw all fundraising activities for the Northeast Utilities Employees’ Political Action Committee (NUEPAC).

Earlier experience includes her time as the Director of Legislative Affairs for the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA). Here she represented the interests of international nameplate automobile retailers before the U.S. Congress and federal agencies, while also overseeing the efforts of a nationwide network of grassroots advocates. Prior to that, she worked for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) conducting high-dollar fundraising for the NAHB political action committee, BUILD-PAC.

Judy is a native of the Washington, D.C. area and a graduate of Gettysburg College, where she earned a BA in political science and Spanish. Judy also volunteers her time as a Board Member of the First Tee of Washington, D.C., a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching kids life values through the game of golf.

Steven Soper has been with Direct Impact since 2007 and provides senior leadership on the design and implementation of grassroots communications and public affairs campaigns. Steven’s experience includes leadership on earned media programs in the automotive and financial services industries, in addition to multiple legislative and public education campaigns focusing on trade, regulations, and land use development. Steven has also conducted numerous communication and media training sessions on behalf of clients across the country and around the world.

Prior to joining DI, Steven served as associate director in The White House Office of Political Affairs during the George W. Bush administration. In this role, he coordinated presidential travel and served as a liaison to campaigns and political leadership for a twelve-state region. Before coming to The White House, Steven held several political positions at the Republican National Committee including director of political education where he was responsible for national party training programs. Steven also worked on the Bush-Cheney ’04 campaign as a regional political coordinator. In this capacity he worked from campaign headquarters and coordinated state staff on various voter contact programs and campaign events-including the battleground states of Ohio, Michigan and West Virginia.

In addition, Steven has held roles on the 55th Presidential Inaugural Committee and the 2000 Republican National Convention, and served as an international election monitor in Serbia.
